Honor Hassett was far from ordinary. She was extraordinary. She was inspirational. She was brave. During the Second World War Honor Hassett joined the Women's Auxiliary Air Force, defying the expectations of her family and friends to become one of the first female aircraft engineers.
This book is a tribute to the women who served in World War Two, but are often ignored in the re-telling of the history of the war. Many women served as pilots, mechanics, code breakers, radar operators, truck drivers, as well as nurses.

The story behind the story
This is the story of Gillian's great aunt, Honora Hassett, who served in the British Women's Auxiliary Air Force during World War II. She was a Spitfire mechanic. I grew up hearing stories of my mother's auntie with the flaming red hair and how she was killed in the war. It wasn't until I was researching for my book, My Name is Henry Fanshaw, that I realised how many women served and the diversity of their roles.
